The African Women’s Development Fund
The African Women’s Development Fund (based in Ghana) is an Africa-wide grant-making organisation which supports women’s empowerment.
The AWDF was established in 2000 by Joanna Foster, Dr Hilda Tadria and Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi. All three women have a track record of successful empowerment interventions. Since its inception, AWDF has funded over 575 women’s organisations in 41 African countries.
AWDF’s vision is for African women to live in a world with social justice, equality and respect for women’s human rights. It aims to mobilise financial resources to support initiatives led by women in Africa.
46664 funding supports the AWDF’s HIV/AIDS Fund and benefits community organisations in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Swaziland, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Togo and Benin. The organisations cover a range of activities including orphan care, HIV prevention, advocacy work and education, creating sustainable livelihoods, counselling services, feeding schemes and providing school fees for children orphaned by AIDS.
