What is the safest contraceptive out there?

I come from a strict, religious family who do not encourage or condone sex before marriage. I want to start having sex with my boyfriend and I’m extremely worried about getting pregnant. We have spoken about using condoms, but I wanted to know if there are other forms of birth control I can use without my parents finding out?

I am very happy that you are making an informed choice before you have sex. I can understand how as individuals we may want to make decisions for ourselves that may go against our family’s beliefs. In terms of sex, while respecting religion is very important, it is equally important to make sure that you remain safe. In this regards, condoms are the safest contraceptive. If used correctly and consistently, they can prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV.

I would strongly advise you to use condoms and perhaps keep them where your family may not find them. It is a difficult decision, but perhaps you can also discuss safe sex with some understanding members of your family and make them understand that in the age of HIV everyone needs to know about condoms. All of this may sound easier said than done, but I honestly believe that you have a right to use the safest contraceptive and that is condoms. Other contraceptives such as the pill will prevent pregnancy but not sexually transmitted infections. If you still need advice, please go to your local clinic or doctor to discuss your options.

Good luck,

Lebo
