I’m in a steady relationship, what are my chances of contracting HIV?

My boyfriend and I both tested negative for HIV and we engage in unprotected sex because I am on a contraceptive. What are my chances of contracting HIV?

Thank you for your letter. I am very happy to hear that you and your partner tested for HIV. The only way that you can make sure that you do not contract HIV is for both of you not to have sex with any other person while you are in this relationship.

HIV is spreading fast in sub-Saharan Africa because most people in this region have more than one sexual partner. Remember, if you have an affair the person you have sex with may also have other sexual partners, creating a sexual network. If one of you contracts HIV it is very easy for it to spread to everybody else in the sexual network.
