Are gay people more likely to get HIV than straight people?

I’ve heard rumours that if you’re gay, you’re more likely to get HIV than if you’re straight. But this doesn’t sound right! Is it true?

Thank you for your question. Anybody who has unprotected sex can get HIV, whether they’re gay or not. It is important for everyone to have sex with a condom every time they have sex. It is especially important for anyone who practices anal sex, because the skin around the anus is sensitive and may tear during sex, making it easier for one to contract HIV, if the other partner is HIV-positive.
